UV Light Spectrum
UV-C light is germicidal and operates most efficiently at a wavelength of 250 – 260 nanometres. It has a photolytic effect whereby the radiation destroys or inactivates the microorganism so that it can no longer multiply. Unlike other techniques, UV-C photolysis rarely produces potentially dangerous by-products.
What is UV Disinfection?
In UV water disinfection technology, Ultraviolet light of wavelength 253.7 nanometre is used for the disinfection of bacteria, viruses, moulds, algae, and other micro-organisms which multiply and grow.
UV disinfection technology destroys the DNA of micro-organisms which leaves them dead and unable to grow further. UV disinfection technology can be used for drinking water disinfection, process water disinfection, wastewater disinfection, and surface disinfection.
Other than disinfection applications, this technology can also be used for Total Organic Carbon (TOC) removal. The OH-radicals react with the organic matter in the water leading to the oxidation into CO2 (carbon dioxide) and H2O (water), effectively resulting in the removal of TOC.
